A pamphlet designed by Gloria for the JoinJade campaign.

Stanford Asian Liver Center

As the Graphic Designer for the Stanford University Asian Liver Center, I established new consistent branding utilized for the global JoinJade campaign, an initiative to fight stigma, end transmission, and eliminate deaths associated with hepatitis B.

Throughout the year, I created social media assets and visualized informational pamphlets to provide a comprehensive overview of HBV, prevention methods, treatment options, and resources. Additionally, I created engaging animations, video and static advertisements, and promotional merchandise to increase exposure of the JoinJade campaign's endeavors.

JOINJADE, WE CARE.

Jade represents good luck and longevity—it has been the color for Hepatitis B awareness since the JoinJade campaign was launched.

When joining the Asian Liver Center and JoinJade campaign, I noticed that we lacked consistent and engaging branding across all platforms. My first initiative on the team was to establish a clear brand guide that could be adhered to throughout my term and forwards. My main contributions on this front included a distinct color palette, with a nod to the jade motif, and two versatile fonts.

PROFESSIONAL DOCUMENTS AND ENGAGING HANDOUTS

Designing for professional audiences and conceptualizing data into concise and digestible visuals.

OFFICIAL MEDICAL RESOURCES

Physician's Guide to Hepatitis B

With my co-design intern Elysha Tsai, I redesigned this handbook in collaboration with the founder of JoinJade, Dr. Samuel So, M.D. and the CDC.

This informational print booklet is 26 pages including a front and back cover and provides a comprehensive overview of HBV, prevention methods, treatment options, and resources.

ENGAGING THE YOUTH

Stanford Youth Leadership Conference Booklet

Every year, the Asian Liver Center hosts a Youth Leadership Conference on Asian and Pacific Islander Health to encourage high school students to learn from industry experts, network, and make like-minded friends.

Within this 100+ page booklet, I designed the layouts for the inner pages and made final composition and color adjustments to the cover of the annual YLC handout.

DEVELOPING OUR SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE

Starting Hep. B awareness young.

Hepatitis B affects over 240 million people around the world, and children and young adults make up a large proportion of the infected population. Despite the seriousness of HBV and its complications, many are unaware of the virus or are poorly linked to clinical care. At the Asian Liver Center, it was our goal to engage a younger audience via social media to tackle the lack of health literacy that may be a critical barrier hindering access to HBV care for children and adults in their lives.

WORLD HEPATITIS DAY

An Instagram carousel post created for World Hepatitis Day on July 28th.

COVID-19 & LIVER DIESEASE

An informational Instagram carousel post outlining Covid-19 precautions & guidelines for those with liver disease.

YLC INTEREST

An early-interest post for the Asian Liver Center's annual Youth Leadership Conference.

LUNAR NEW YEARS ANIMATION

An illustrated animation to celebrate Lunar New Years. This graphic was publicized on our social media platforms and was optimized to be easily shared on messaging platforms.

YLC APPLICATIONS & TESTIMONIAL

Two additional marketing posts to garner interest for the annual Youth Leadership Conference. The first was to gather volunteers to lead team activities, and the second was a testimonial from a previous attendee.

ADVERTISEMENTS AND MERCHANDISE

Reaching an international audience.

Over the course of my internship, I also had the pleasure of working on videos, animated content, and physical merchandise. Some of these items were also done in collaboration with international teams at the Asian Liver Center in Beijing, where we produced celebrity-endorsed videos that were aired on television and static advertisements which were physically put up at public transportation stops.

ANIMATED VIDEO

Hepatitis B Lyrics Video

I worked with my co-design intern Elysha Tsai, to create an effective and visually-engaging lyrics video promoting 2022's World Hepatitis Day. I was responsible for designing vector illustrations relevant to the lyrics and animating them to the song.

STATIC ADVERTISEMENTS

Billboard Designs for Beijing

In collaboration with designers at the Asian Liver Center branch in Beijing, I created two billboard designs featuring Chinese actor & philanthropist, Huang Xiao Ming, who served as the 2020 World Hepatitis Day Ambassador. These advertisements were displayed at over 40 different Beijing subway and bus stops, as well as promoted on major Chinese media platforms such as CCTV, Tencent, iQIYI, and China Development News.

VIDEO ADVERTISEMENTS

Vietnam PSA Video

In collaboration with the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, I assisted in shooting and editing a PSA video to support the government of Vietnam in strengthening the capacity of the health care system. Our goal was to increase vaccination coverage at birth and the prevention of mother to child transmission of Hepatitis B.

This PSA was aired on Crossings TV, an Asian language TV network, over 600 times in California.

PHYSICAL MERCHANDISE

Medical Face Mask Designs

I ideated various mask designs that were meant to be distributed at future ALC booths and to communities in need. 2,000 JoinJade masks were given to individuals with trouble accessing medical-grade masks, such as the homeless and senior residents.

My Takeaways

Over my internship, I had the pleasure of experiencing plenty of collaboration and expanding my graphic design practice towards a more professional audience. It gave me the opportunity to exercise my creativity, while still staying within brand guidelines and addressing all aspects of the design requests. This position also allowed me to learn how to work in a corporate setting, in which I was not always designing for creatively-oriented coworkers.

I learned the most from creating the Physician’s Guidebook. The editing and refinement process was arduous but taught me the importance of establishing design guidelines and how to design for professional audiences. In corporate settings, I also found that creating low-fidelity drafts was crucial in streamlining my design process and receiving edits. By making simple, yet communicative prototypes, I was able to display my ideas to non-design coworkers to receive critique, without having to fully mockup each design. Maintaining constant communication in a remote work setting was also a very important skill I learned during the internship.
